Lexington Montessori School (LMS) is an accredited, independent Montessori school. It is non-profit, non-denominational, and was founded in 1980, primarily through the efforts of Susan and Ben Magedenz. Susan Magedenz was one of the founders of Montessori Educators International, an organization developed to train Montessori teachers in the United States.

Since Lexington Montessori School’s initial year of operation, during which the school served 24 local three-, four-, and five-year olds in a primary classroom, LMS has expanded the number of students served and the number of grade levels. In 1984, a second primary classroom was added. In 1988, a junior elementary classroom was formed to serve children in first through third grade. In 1992, a senior elementary classroom was added for children in 4th through the 6th grade. LMS also operated a satellite campus on the south side of Lexington from 1988 until 1994; at that time, the satellite campus was merged with the main campus on South Broadway Park. LMS was the first Montessori school in Lexington to offer a full-day program.

Currently, 60 students are enrolled in the primary and elementary classrooms. Located close to the University of Kentucky campus and the downtown area, LMS serves families living throughout Lexington. The composition of our student body and school community reflects the diversity of the larger Lexington community.
